The terrorist attack in Macerata

Last Saturday, a neo-fascist terrorist and militant member of the Northern League, Luca Traini, opened fire and severely wounded six people in Macerata (Italy). The only thing these people have in common is the color of their skin. They are all Black.
Just a couple of days before, here at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, on the occasion of Black History Month, we opened a photographic exhibit that focuses on the study, understanding, and celebration of Black bodies in the Italian and European context.
The heinous, racist attack in Macerata does nothing but confirm the importance of education in eradicating race-based hatred. We will continue to educate people in understanding that difference - any kind of difference - is not something to be tolerated in today's society. It is something that should be embraced and exalted.
