Empire’s Mobius Strip: Italy’s Migrant Crisis Today and Its Colonial Past

In her new book, presented at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò on November 4, author Stephanie Malia Hom argues that Italy’s response to today’s migrant crisis is rooted in the nation’s imperial history. The main way empire’s Mobius strip operates, its looping of past and present, of colonial imperialism and neoliberal empire, is through control of movement and of “unsanctioned mobility.” It’s a system that she says should be “razed and rebuilt.” Today, we still need to guard against such abuses.
